In December 2013, the Biotechnology Business Institute undertook its first official international business mission to South America through its participation in the Biolatam Partnering & Conference, held on 9–10 December in Bogotá, Colombia.
Event Organization
The event was organized by Asociación Española de Bioempresas (AseBio) and Invest in Bogota, with the collaboration of Biocat and other leading institutions from Spain and Colombia. Biolatam was established to position itself as the principal partnering and investment forum for the biotechnology and life sciences sectors in Latin America.
Participation and Attendance
The 2013 edition brought together more than 500 participants from the United States, Latin America, Europe, and other key biotechnology markets, including Japan, Israel, and Canada. The conference also attracted over 20 international venture capital funds, underscoring its relevance as a strategic platform for innovation financing and cross-border collaboration.
Objectives of Participation
Through its participation, the Biotechnology Business Institute sought to strengthen institutional relationships and explore academic and industry partnerships within emerging life sciences ecosystems. The conference program addressed priority global themes such as bioeconomy and biofuels, advanced therapies, food biotechnology, personalized medicine, healthcare products, and venture capital.
Partnering Module
A structured partnering module, supported by PartneringOne software from EBD Group—organizers of leading international life sciences congresses—facilitated targeted meetings among companies, investors, research centers, and public institutions.
Significance of the Mission
This first international mission represented a significant milestone in the Institute’s long-term strategic development. It marked the beginning of a broader internationalization process aimed at fostering global collaboration, supporting biotechnology entrepreneurship, and strengthening connections between European and Latin American innovation ecosystems.
Future Engagement
The participation in Biolatam Bogotá 2013 laid an important foundation for the Biotechnology Business Institute’s continued international engagement in the years that followed.
