Barcelona, Spain 2014 - The Biotechnology Business Institute (BBI) has launched Europe’s first International MBA designed specifically for scientists and healthcare professionals seeking to develop careers in leadership, management, entrepreneurship and investment within the life sciences sector.

This pioneering programme was created in response to a clear gap in the European education landscape: the need for tailored executive training that enables scientific professionals to transition into strategic and commercial roles across biotechnology, pharmaceuticals and healthcare innovation.

At the time of its launch in Barcelona, BBI became the first business school in Europe to develop a dedicated MBA for scientific profiles, integrating scientific understanding with business, innovation and investment capabilities. The programme was designed to reflect the evolving needs of the life sciences ecosystem, where successful innovation increasingly depends on professionals who can operate at the interface between science and business.

The MBA provides participants with a comprehensive understanding of the life sciences value chain, from early-stage research and development through to financing, regulatory strategy, business development and market access. It is structured to equip scientists, researchers, clinicians and entrepreneurs with the tools required to lead innovation-driven organisations and contribute to the successful translation of science into healthcare solutions.

A core feature of the programme is its applied and industry-oriented approach. Participants engage with real-world case studies and gain exposure to key stakeholders across the ecosystem, including biotechnology companies, pharmaceutical organisations, investors, entrepreneurs and industry experts. This ensures a practical understanding of how scientific innovation is developed, financed, commercialised and delivered to patients.

The curriculum places particular emphasis on the intersection of science, management and investment, covering areas such as innovation strategy, entrepreneurship, intellectual property, regulatory affairs, business development, licensing and venture capital. This multidisciplinary approach is designed to prepare participants for leadership roles in a rapidly evolving and highly competitive global sector.

The launch of the International MBA in Biotechnology & Innovation represents a key milestone in BBI’s founding mission: to develop the next generation of scientific leaders capable of bridging the gap between research and industry. By creating a programme specifically tailored to scientific professionals, BBI established a new model of executive education in Europe focused on the practical realities of life sciences innovation.

Originally launched in Barcelona, the programme marked the beginning of BBI’s journey as an international institution dedicated to strengthening the life sciences ecosystem through education, talent development and cross-sector collaboration. It laid the foundation for the Institute’s subsequent expansion and continues to reflect its core mission today.
